Profile

I am a Senior Lecturer (Applied Biostatistics/Statistical Epidemiology) at the Department of Basic Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences. I am currently the Hall Master of Sokode Hall of the University. I have been with the University since September 2015 and I teach Advanced Biostatistics and Research Methods to Postgraduate students as well as Biostatistics, Research Methods and Quantitative Literacy to Undergraduate students.

Education
I hold a PhD and MPhil in Mathematical Statistics and a BSc. in Actuarial Science from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. I also hold certificates in R Programming (Coursera, Johns Hopkins University), Introduction to Big Data (Coursera, University of California) and a certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from West African Built Environment Research (WABER). I am a BCDI 2030 Fellow at Queen’s University, School of Kinesiology and Health Studies in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Work experience
Before joining UHAS, I worked as a Teaching Assistant (2011-2012) and Demonstrator (2012-2014) in the Department of Mathematics, KNUST. I was a member of the 2013/2014 KNUST-GRASAG Research Conference organizing committee. In UHAS, I was appointed September 2015 and have risen to the rank of Senior Lecturer in December 2022. I supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students. My role as a Lecturer allows me to mentor students, contribute to impactful research and apply data analytics to address pressing challenges in epidemiology and Public Health. I have co-authored over forty peer-reviewed articles published in internationally acclaimed journals.

Science/Research output
My research area is Applied Statistical epidemiology and Biostatistics, focusing on the integration of Data Science Methodologies to solve complex issues in Public Health, Biology, Mental Health and Psychology. I employ Multivariate techniques like Factor Analysis to uncover patterns and relationships within large datasets. Path Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling are used to understand the directional influences between health variables. I use Generalized Linear Models and Categorical Data Analysis to model and predict outcomes and analyze categorical data. I use Machine Learning algorithms to develop predictive models and uncover insights from data that are not immediately apparent. Lastly, I employ Data Visualization techniques to present findings in a clear and accessible manner, facilitating better decision-making and communication among health professionals and stakeholders. This integrative approach seeks to harness the full potential of data science to improve health outcomes and psychological well-being.

I was a Co-I on the project: Interplay between the gut microbiome, immunity, nutrition and metabolism in diabetic and obese persons, which was supported by a Grant from the African Partnership for Chronic Disease Research (APCDR). Also, I was a Co-PI on the project: Modelling the Transmission Dynamics of Malaria with Optimal Net Distribution Strategies and Cost-effectiveness Analysis for Evidence-based Policy Decision-making in Ghana, which was funded by ACoMVeC ORPs Grants (GAEC/BNARI/AP/13), Amount: $4000.00. I was awarded a number of Travel Grants and scholarships for local and international workshops, including a scholarship to attend the African Data Science Degrees Design & Implementation workshop, Held at Quantum Leap Africa, AIMS Rwanda, Kigali, from 27th March to 1st April 2023. I was a lead Biostatistician on a number of research studies and grants at UHAS. Due to my research activities, I have at least 50 peer-reviewed publications and 4 conference/workshop presentations.

I was awarded the BCDI 2030 Scholarship, valued at 11,089 Canadian dollars. As a BCDI 2030 Fellow at Queen’s University, School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, I am leveraging machine learning and data analytics to determine the impact of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme on the mental and general health of extremely poor and vulnerable households in Ghana. The fellowship provides me the opportunity to leverage data science and machine learning skills, foster significant collaborations to develop impactful data-driven solutions to public health challenges, enhance healthcare delivery and advance evidence-based health policies.

I supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students in applied statistical epidemiology and the application of statistics and data science in public health and biology.

I review for several journals, including Scientific African, PLOS ONE, Scientific Reports, Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operations Research, Journal of Public Health Research, Ghana Medical Journal, Journal of Advances in Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as some journals under Heliyon. I am also an Academic Editor for PLOS ONE.
